week 9

So I guess we have finally had our moving day. I mean it had to come at some point right? Though the way things had been going, moving day might not have been til sometime around week 11...but alas, we have some form of clarity in the FCS world. Its still not much when you look at the conference races in the Southland, Big Sky, and the CAA (my word the possibilities) but the number of teams we thought had playoff hopes lowered considerably after this week.

CAA Bundle

Speaking of the CAA, after this past weeks action, four teams (Deleware, James Madison, Towson, Maine) sit at the top of the conference with 4-1 records. Elon, who had the week off, sits at 3-1. And not to leave them out of the mix, Stony Brook sits at 4-2 and Rhode Island still is in the hunt at 3-2. And to top all the craziness, they all have 5 or more wins overall, all have solid playoff resumes, and all of them play at least two of the other teams before the season ends

So, the moral of the story is, if you can figure out who will win the conference and get in the playoffs, you know a lot more than most cause figuring out the knot of string hurts. Luckily I like a little pain and will be doing my best in a post later this week

So who are these guys?

You may not have noticed them, but the Colgate redemption tour is coming soon to the playoffs. With the 38-0 destruction of Georgetown, Colgate is now 7-0 and ranked 12th in the Stats Top 25 and passed probably its last real test before the playoffs. And the Raiders are taking care of things defensively...the Raiders posted its FCS leading fourth shutout of the season (in five weeks) and overall has only allowed 23 points all year (17 of those opening week versus Holy Cross). For those who didn't want to do the math, that is an average of 3.3 points a game. On top of that, they only give up 218.4 yards per game and Georgetown had 36 total yards

Here is the one hiccup...Colgate hasn't played anyone. The combined record of the teams they have played so far...18-38. Yes granted they played New Hampshire and still have Army on the schedule, but both are having down years. If they do win out, which is possible, this team could sneak a Top 8 seed and have a pretty favorable bracket. They are the wildcard of the whole playoffs because nobody really knows how good they are

Unbreakable Record?

This is one of those records that when you hear about it and hear how long it has been you just have to sit in awe of the length and the scope of the record itself. So to break the suspense, Dayton has now gone an amazing 474 games without being shutout.

That record stretches all levels, from FBS to Division III.  The 474 straight games with points is a streak that date backs to 1976 when the Flyers competed on the Division III level. If you look at just the FCS level its still at 279 games.

To put the streak in some perspective...Montana had a streak of 373 games, Florida had one of 363.
Gerald Ford was in the White House, gas was 59 cents for a gallon and Star Wars was still about a year away from premiering. Oct 16, 1976, the last time the Flyers were shutout, Marshall won 9-0

When in doubt ground it out

The weather in the Northeast wasn't pretty this past weekend so it would just be the case that a couple running backs in the Northeast Conference topped the 300-yard mark on the ground.

Sacred Heart senior tailback, Jordan Meachum set a school-record with 318 yards on 23 carries in the 47-27 win at home versus Bryant. Add on top, three touchdowns as the Pioneers stayed at the top of the Northeast.

Central Connecticut State sophomore Aaron Dawson messed around and went out and set the conference record with 361 yards on only 24 carries plus five touchdowns in the 49-24 win versus Wagner. Oh yeah, he set a Division I record (yards in a half) by getting 308 of those yards in the second half. Hey, maybe all that rain helped

Conference Rundown #13 Southwestern Athletic Conference

Let me just start off by saying the SWAC might be the best of the abbreviated conferences when you say it. It just comes off as something cool and makes you puff out your chest a little when you say it. Ok enough being weird...we start off with a conference who, if your looking strictly at attendance numbers you would think it was a great conference, but alas the reality is that SWAC is at the bottom of the totem pole and for good reason. And it sucks that's its at this level because of all the history, tradition, the alumni but the product that is produced year after year is just bad. Placement Reasoning What you will see with a lot of the lower ranked conferences is that outside of the conference, most of the teams can't hang with the others. The SWAC is the guiltiest of the lot. Outside of Grambling, the SWAC doesn't have a lot in terms of depth and teams who can go out of conference and take down even a small fry from say the Southland or NEC. They were one of three...

The weekend that was....(Part 2)

Here I am back again...did promise you more. My thoughts on the field of 24 and ranking them 24-1 from least likely to win to most likely to celebrate in Frisco, TX Playoff Selection Thoughts Look, I know, with me writing this I'm playing a "Monday Morning QB" deal but the committee of 10 had one hell of a time picking 24 teams to get in the playoffs. Not everyone will be happy but hey, that's part of the job So getting the nice nice out of the way...the fact that Nicholls, New Hampshire, and S. Dakota made the playoffs is just mind blogging. All three lost their last game, Nicholls lost on the road to SE Louisiana and New Hampshire got shutout by 4-7 Albany. But even while those are bad, the worst entry was S. Dakota...ending a season at 1-4 shouldn't give you a playoff team. But the weirdest twist, all three have a chance at deep runs and two host a playoff game The team with the loudest beef should be Austin Peay. Good story aside, to go 7-1 versus FC...
So that's it...2017 season is over. The dynasty continues as North Dakota St won its 6th national championship in 7 years, more on those guys later. The playoffs as a whole were, to quote an old coach "not too stinky" While we got the end matchup everyone hoped for, getting there left a lot to be desired. That's not to say we got a good meal, but if we are being nit-picky about things the playoffs are the equivalent of some dishes not having and seasoning and others have a bit too much. The Bracket This one is the one big gripe from me and almost everyone in the land of FCS. The playoffs this year  were this weird hybrid of seeding with regional requirements that almost guarantees we get conference rematches, an unbalanced bracket, a some team really gets the shaft. This isn't some new problem unfortunately, ever since the playoffs were expanded first to 20 and now to 24 teams, we have seen a bracket and matchups that too often look slanted. In James Madi...
